To address growing concerns by HCV assessors and oil palm companies on difficulties in interpretation and implementation of the HCV concept in oil palm plantations, the RSPO commissioned a study by Daemeter Consulting to highlight barriers to effective implementation and identify potential solutions to overcome them.

This study is underway using methods that include direct in-person interviews of stakeholders, questionnaire-based inputs and document review. As part of the study, a summary of interview results is being shared with stakeholders for review and input. A one-day meeting for invited participants was held 4 July 2011 in Bogor for this purpose.

Daemeter is calling for comments on the preliminary results of the study, and the following documents can be downloaded for review:

Please post your comments through the online form by 21 July 2011; for more information contact info@daemeter.org

Call for comment on Draft 2.1 of the Australian High Conservation Values (HCV) Evaluation Framework, which has been developed by FSC Australia to assist companies sourcing non-FSC certified Controlled Wood in Australia.  It sets out recommended approaches to evaluating for HCV and will be supported by a data tool being developed independently by consultant Rod Knight for FSC Australia.  While the Framework has been designed for use in evaluating HCV for Controlled Wood, it may also provide a basis for defining HCV in a future Australian FSC Forest Management Standard.  Click here to access the draft framework; all comments should be submitted directly to  info@fscaustralia.org and the consultation closes on 13 June 2011.

  • ZSL Questionnaire on identifying and managing biodiversity in oil palm concessions

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is working to develop practical guidance to help RSPO members implement the Biodiversity P&C (BP&C) more effectively; this will involve field testing different methods for assessing and managing biodiversity within oil palm concessions. They have developed a short questionnaire to gain further information about measures that are currently being used to identify and manage biodiversity within oil palm concessions and to highlight areas where further guidance is most needed, and would appreciate you taking a few minutes to complete this; the questionnaire is available in both Bahasa Indonesia and English.

Please return all completed questionnaires directly to: Sophie Persey, Email Sophie.persey"at"zsl.org; Fax: +622518357347; Address: Jalan Burangrang 18, Bogor, 16151, Indonesia (the deadline for responding is by end of April 2010).

A presentation summarising this project made at the HCV Workshop during RSPO's RT7 may be downloaded here (also available from the Network Meetings & Briefings page); click here for more information on the ZSL's Biodiversity and Oil Palm Project or visit the Biodoiversity Information for Oil Palm website.
