Past Events

The Biodiversity Institute’s research theme on Biodiversity Beyond Protected Areas aims to enhance understanding of increasing pressures on biodiversity and the conservation practices which need to take place beyond reserves to enable the persistence of biodiversity within these landscapes; the purpose of this symposium is to bring together the latest science and evidence for conserving biodiversity beyond protected areas. Topics will include modelling complexity, persistence of biodiversity, restoration of ecological processes to degraded lands, marine conservation, cultural landscapes, governance, and business and community connections in conservation.

A number of members of the HCV RN Steering Group will be giving presentations at a session entitled 'How the private sector plays an effective role in conservation?; click here for more details of the programme and to register to attend the symposium.

Background: Implementing effective measures to maintain and enhance species and natural habitats of High Conservation Value (HCV) is widely recognised as one of the most challenging aspects of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil Principles & Criteria (RSPO P&C) to implement. This workshop will provide an opportunity for practitioners working to overcome these challenges to share their experience in order to identify practical solutions. The discussions over the course of this workshop will provide further input for the development of a ‘Practical handbook for conserving species and habitats of High Conservation Value in oil palm landscapes’, which will be produced by ZSL.

Part of the Proforest 10th Summer Training Programme, this 1-day course is aimed at anyone needing an understanding of how standards and certification address key issues in biodiversity conservation, the protection of affected peoples, and the involvement of local communities in natural resource management. The course will be of particular interest for forest and plantation managers, wood and vegetable oil processors, traders, retailers, organizations supporting conservation and development and those involved in policymaking and procurement decision-making, as well as anyone involved in legal and sustainable natural product purchasing and trade.

For more information and details of how to book, please visit the Proforest website

A two-day ZSL symposium, organised by: Sarah Christie (ZSL), Helen Crowley (WCS), Matthew Hatchwell (WCS), Ruth Nussbaum (Proforest) and Sophie Persey (ZSL); the focus of this symposium will be to define a common vision for integrating environmental and socio-economic goals for more sustainable palm oil production and to identify and catalyse the stakeholder actions necessary to achieve this. As a first step, key scientists, policy makers, NGOs and private sector representatives will review the science and practicalities of reconciling continued global oil palm expansion with biodiversity conservation and the maintenance of ecosystem functions. The second step will be to explore the processes, decisions and conditions necessary to make this common vision a reality, highlighting the roles of investors, policymakers, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, palm oil producers, retailers and NGOs.

13 June 2011 update: Click here to download the presentations made; please note that the symposium organisers are in the process of producing a short publication to summarise the key issues discussed over the course of the two-day meeting (which when completed will also be made available).

A workshop of HCV specialists held at FSC in Bonn, at the invitation of FSC and WWF. The detailed objectives are shown in the Agenda, Annex 1.
